I was fortunate this week to take a leisurely walk on West Cliff Drive along the Santa Cruz Coast. The path overlooks the ocean in a most dramatic vista. The weather was warm and sunny. A slight mist filled the sky and the waves were unusually full and tumultuous. The waves tumbled in along the shore in a rush of pure white foam and the sun glistened like diamonds on the top of the water. My heart sang with joy and my find was filled with thoughts of our heavenly Father. "This is what He is like!", I mused. His creation shows His power and might and glory and splendor.
I pondered the beauty and majesty which God's handiwork reveals about His nature. As I did, a line from the Christian song "Here I am to Worship" by Tim Hughs came to my mind. It reads, "You're altogether lovely, altogether worthy, altogether wonderful to me." Yes, this speaks of the God who made the seas, the skies, the sun and the moon, lush pastures, and the verdant hills and mountains. But I had forgotten the rest of the lyrics to this beautiful hymn. When I looked up the full text I found these words:
"Light of the world
You stepped down into darkness
Opened my eyes, let me see
Beauty that made this heart adore you
Hope of a life spent with you
King of all days, oh so highly exalted,
Glorious in heaven above
Humbly you came to the earth you created
All for love's sake became poor
And I'll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross
And I'll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross"
This God we serve is so dynamic, magnificent, and resplendent. He possesses all power and authority in heaven and earth. And yet He freely chose to leave His place of glory in order to die a horrific death on a cross of humiliation. His did this so that His fallen children might spend eternity with Him! What humility and sacrificial love He has shown! Such a Deity is beyond my comprehension. All I can do is grasp His character by faith and worship and adore Him in gratitude.
