"Do Not Lose Heart"

I am thinking about the many times I have prayed countless prayers for months on end for a particular situation. It appeared that nothing was changing on the outside and at times deep discouragement would set in. I would grow weary and even question God why I was not seeing answered prayer. But I knew in my heart I could not give up, and the Lord would always come through and give me the courage and strength to keep praying.

Just these last few days in that situation, I have seen three different ways in which God has heard and answered my prayers. There are still many break throughs that need to happen but I know God has His hand in it, and He will complete the answer in His time.

God specifically tells us in His word...

"And let us not grow weary while doing good,
for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart."
 Galatians 6:9

So I encourage you sister to keep praying and not grow weary or lose heart for in due time you will see God's goodness and faithfulness in your prayers.

 In His Outrageous Love,
Sandy Billingham

Devotional for 4/23/13

God’s Gift to Me at a Gravesite

When my husband opened the blinds on the sliding glass door this morning, as usual, he said, “Wow!  Look at that sky.”  So I did, as usual, look at the beautiful morning. I am telling you about this scene from my life as a way of introducing myself. I’m delighted to be writing to you and I would like to share how God paints Himself into my day.
I begin this first Tuesday with a vision that I believe God gave me to help me put some important Godly principles into perspective for me. Years ago when I was a young mom with 3 young ones and a husband who was gone for long stretches serving our country in the US Coast Guard I had a dream.
In my dream, I was strolling along the street on a lovely spring morning. As I rounded a corner, I saw a white blanket bunched up on the boulevard.  Did I also hear a baby cry?  Moving closer, I discovered it was a baby’s cry!  I picked up the bundle and held it tightly to my breast. The crying stopped.   Moving a corner of the blanket away, the crying began again, almost screaming! So I brought it back to my breast, patting the blanket and speaking words of comfort.  Immediately the crying stopped.  This happened off and on until I was exhausted and had to sit down.  Why would someone leave a baby like this?!  I was angry with the situation and sorrowful for the baby. I was also frustrated as to what to do next.
Cars drive by but take no notice of what is happening. I begin yelling and waving to get their attention, but it was as if they couldn’t see or hear me.  Then I realized - they didn’t!  They were going about their daily lives unaware of me and my struggle.  I fell asleep rocking the fearful bundle.
When I awoke, I felt strangely peaceful and rested.  The bundle was quiet. Something to the left caught my eye.  I was sure it hadn’t been there before; turning my head to get a clearer view, I saw the front yard of a house.  A small grave looked like it had been recently excavated; a pile of dirt was near the opening waiting to be replaced.  A headstone was in place and on it, the name “Self.”
Looking at the scene, peace and release, yes, even anticipation, flowed through me. Then I realized what God was revealing to me: if self and I weren’t separated, the fullness of my life in Jesus wouldn’t happen.  As I laid the pleading, whimpering bundle into the grave, a voice quietly said, “Its ok. This is meant to be.”
Walking home I could hear the cry following me. It was reaching out to me and trying to draw me back. How could I bury a part of myself?!! Isn’t that part of who God made me to be? What have I done?  The cry continues over the years, sometimes whimpering, other times screaming. Self never gives up; I was born with her presence, but, I have also been born again - with a spirit of adoption! (See Romans 8:10-15).  The once stronger “Flesh” can be quieted. Faith is now the stronger attitude. Listen! Do you hear what I hear?
But I say, walk by the Spirit,
and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit,
 and the Spirit against the flesh;
for these are in opposition to one another,
so that you may not do the things that you please.
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.
Galatians 5:16-18 (New American Standard Bible)
Oh, the brush strokes in the Painter’s hand this morning?  Blue sky, wispy, whimsical, streaks of white feather-like clouds!  His heart rejoices when our hearts return His love (see Zephaniah 3:17).

Too Busy To Grow?

Have you ever had a weekend that was so busy you were looking forward to catching your breath at work on Monday? Does it seem like almost every weekend is that hectic? I try to do things I enjoy on my days off, but the schedule fills up so quickly it doesn't seem as if there is actually a day off.

Yesterday I had 30 minutes before I needed to leave for yet another weekend commitment. I quickly changed into some work clothes and headed into our small suburban back yard to weed a garden box. Well, I didn't finish. So all my cute 2 inch seedlings must remain in the small half inch spots in the starter tray. But I know if I want to enjoy tomatoes in the late summer I must prepare the garden and get the plants in the ground now.

A little later I noticed how bright and shiny my indoor houseplants are looking. Well, I said to myself, at least those are doing well. They are doing well because they are already planted in good soil, are situated to receive some sunshine every day, and are watered regularly.

A thought popped into my head that I can be like that beautiful plant. All I need is to spend some time reading the Bible every day. If I do that, I can receive some sunshine (God's encouragement), keep my soil good (His truth keeping me humble and grateful), and drink some water (His word waters my soul). Then I will be equipped to be the lovely, kind, patient, and compassionate woman He has called all believers to be (see Colossians 3:12).

Rather, you must grow in the grace
and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
 2 Peter 3:18

Dear Lord, there is so much in Your Word that we can never be done studying it. Thank You for leading us into Your truth and for giving us and wisodm and understanding. I pray that as each one of us reads even one verse that You will give us hearts to understand what You are saying to us. In Jesus name, amen.

THE UNSEEN

Devotional for Sunday 4/21/13

We need to always be prepared to defend that which we believe. To do that, we need to firmly believe and hold fast to that belief.  If we have doubts about our faith in Jesus Christ, it will be more difficult to explain or defend it.  It is more difficult to have a strong faith in something we cannot actually see or touch.

Then Jesus told [Thomas], “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”  John 20:29 NIV

No one has perfectly unwavering faith.  But God will help give us the words needed to defend our faith at the appropriate times.  There may be times that we encounter people who do not believe in life after death, heaven and God, or salvation through Jesus Christ because they cannot see those things.  I love this analogy I saw on Facebook:

In a mother's womb were two babies. One asked the other: "Do you believe in life after delivery?" The other replies, "Why, of course. There has to be something after delivery. Maybe we are here to prepare ourselves for what we will be later. "Nonsense," says the other. "There is no life after delivery. What would that life be?" "I don't know, but there will be more light than here. Maybe we will walk with our legs and eat from our mouths." The other says "This is absurd! Walking is impossible. And eat with our mouths? Ridiculous. The umbilical cord supplies nutrition. Life after delivery is to be excluded. The umbilical cord is too short." "I think there is something and maybe it's different than it is here." the other replies, "No one has ever come back from there. Delivery is the end of life, and in the after-delivery it is nothing but darkness and anxiety and it takes us nowhere." "Well, I don't know," says the other, "but certainly we will see mother and she will take care of us." "Mother??" You believe in mother? Where is she now? "She is all around us. It is in her that we live. Without her there would not be this world." "I don't see her, so it's only logical that she doesn't exist." To which the other replied, "sometimes when you're in silence you can hear her, you can perceive her." I believe there is a reality after delivery and we are here to prepare ourselves for that reality...."

What a wonderful way to illustrate how we can have faith in something unseen! May God give us the strength to stand up for Him like that as well.

Saturday Devotional...He will never leave...not ever

I will be with you always, to the very end of the age.
 Matthew 28:20

People leave. I know that. Its something I dread, yet something I have a lot of experience with. My grandmother was the light of my life when I was small. My Mom would drop me off to stay with her for days at a time. She was my protector and always defended me, and loved me in spite of my childhood spoiled fits. I felt safe with her. I loved the way she smelled. Its funny when we really love someone the way they smell brings us comfort and connection. Its feeds my soul and brings a calm sense of everything is okay in this moment next to you. She was a VERY strong Christian. She read her Bible everyday, and I do not ever remember her saying an unkind word to me ever. I KNEW she loved me with out words spoken. It was there always like the air I breath. A spirit of love and peace, and  it brought me such joy as a child. When the days were getting closer to her death I knew she wanted to leave and go home to her Creator. Every Christmas for the past 10 years she would say, "Well this might be my last Christmas, I really want to go home." I used to get so mad. "Memmaw, don't say that. You are going to live for a long time." The next year she would say the same thing. Oh my goodness it was frustrating. I really wanted her to tell me she would be with me forever and never leave. But she knew she couldn't. Her destiny was heaven that was her eternal goal and she believed in it with all her heart.

She left us. The pain was unbearable, but I knew she was finally home. Her sick, failing body was made new, and she was finally next to her Creator whom she had worshiped with steadfast strength and confidence. I have her Bible, the one that she always had on her lap. In my teenage years I would run to her after one of my wild drunken spells sick from a weekend of parties and just lay next to her on her couch and feel her love. She would never question me about what had happened. She would just say, "Angie honey, you are not feeling good are you." I would just say, "No, Memmaw, I am sick." I did not want to scare her with my wild tale of rebellion, but I knew she knew. I still sleep with the blanket she had on her casket. It makes me feel like a part of her is still with me.

Jesus knew he would leave his friends that followed him. He also knew how much they depended on his unconditional love and friendship. He gave then strength and hope. A hope that they did not have in the world of their time. He promised them that He would leave something with them, that He would be with them always. The word always could be paraphrased to mean,  "I am with you all the days,, all day long" That means His spirit is still with us after His death, not just all day but in every moment, in every breath we take, in every thought, and even sometimes in the shining eyes and face of our loved ones. I have felt that spirit fill me up with love just like how I felt when I would sit next to my grandmother in times of heaviness. I know He loves just like she did, but He won't leave. EVER. Not even when I feel I have out sinned my welcome. He knows. He knew what I was going to do before I did it. But His presence is there waiting to comfort me and love me back to wholeness. He is my strength, my hope, my love, my everything. Always present. Eternally.

The eternal God is your refuge.

Friday Devotional......What Do You Make Out of the Signs You See?

Signs of Faith ....or Failure

Every day, there is more bad news.  Stories that make me want to crawl back into bed and pull the covers over my head.  Even in my personal life; friends and neighbors are suffering, and many times the only thing I can offer are my prayers.

But, while this may be the only thing, it is something powerful.  Bigger at times than the practical, everyday things that those in the world may offer.  It’s really a matter of perspective.  I see what is going on.  I know that people are in pain, but I must hold on to my faith.  If I do nothing else, I have to do this.

We see things every day, signs of good or evil.  Some of us only see one or the other.  But the truth is that both exist, and we should not ignore either, least we fall into a trap and allow the enemy to win.

I am blessed and know it.  God reminds me every day, by showing me the beauty in the everyday things of this world.  Horrible things are happening, even while I enjoy my walk to work.  At the same time, there are signs of beauty.  Remembering this is what allows me to keep going.   Signs that give me reasons to continue to praise God, even while I pray for those whose suffering seems unbearable.  So I pray for them to find Jesus in their darkest misery.  I pray for them to recall even the smallest act of mercy that will allow them to hold on just a few moments more.

Like the small plant and flowers that grow in cracks that have just enough dirt in them.  Faith can grow, even out of something painful and ugly.

This world could end today.  Before my next breath, I could be gone.  Each breath is a gift each spark of light is hope.  I feel the Holy Spirit rise up and whisper words for me to use when someone needs a touch of God’s Love.  Even if they are not ready to say that He is the reason that they feel loved, I can speak of love and allow God to speak to them long after I have
gone.

Thank You, God, for allowing me to see beyond the pain into the love in Your Eyes.  Thank you for allowing me to know that this agony is temporary, that one day, we will be with you in heaven; surrounded by Your Glory.  Please keep me mindful of the fragility of this life, and grateful for the life to come.  I pray this, in the Precious Name of Jesus Christ, Amen!

We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.”  Hebrews 2:1-4

Thursday Devotional....Our Value to God Shows Us…

                                                ...Who we are to Him

Our writers are going on a retreat on the last weekend of April. The theme is "Our Value to God.” There are many scripture verses that address this topic. The two scriptures in this devotional are not included in this list of scriptures. However, these two scriptures seem to give the most evidence of who we are to God.

But God demonstrates
his own lovefor us in this:
While we were still sinners,
Christ died for us.
Romans 5:24
We are so very important to God that He was willing to sacrifice the life of His Son, Jesus. He did not insist that we prove ourselves by acts of our paltry human power. Even though we are who and what we are God values us so much. We are His children…His creation. He knows that we cannot earn salvation, but He wants to offer us eternal life in spite of our shortcomings. How amazing is that. He was willing to die for us while we were still sinners. He did not hold off for some human miracle by which we could make ourselves worthy by our own strength.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
In evidence for this topic there is also the following scripture…

“I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message
and believe in God who sent me have eternal life.
They will never be condemned for their sins,
but they have already passed from death into life.

John 5:24

This tells us that even though we have sinned we will not be judged because of our sin. If we believe in God we will have life eternally with Him, because we have already passed from death into life. I am blessed by this, because it tells me that I no longer am under the condemnation of my sin. I do believe that it calls a certain striving from me to live a life that shows good will and love of God. However, if in my human weakness I stumble He has already forgiven me for my shortcomings.

THANK YOU GOD!
