BIRTHDAYS... Sunday

Devotional for 12/01/13

Today is my birthday!  We celebrate birthdays various ways in our culture. There are special birthday cards, birthday cake, sometimes a party, a special meal, and perhaps gifts.  Different people have different expectations for their birthday celebrations.  Even in the Bible we find several times when feasts are held to honor a special person's birthday.  When we are young, we often enjoy those special days.  Sometimes as we age, we prefer if people would just forget that we have added another number to our years on earth!  But overall, birthdays are generally considered special days in our lives to celebrate.

But there is a more important birthday for us, as Christians.  It is our spiritual birthday, the birth of our faith in God.  Many of us consider that to be the day that we were baptized with the Holy Spirit, God's gift to us that creates faith in our hearts.  It is the day that we are born again in the Spirit.  That faith may begin as a small glimmer of hope within us.  As we feed that flame, listening to God's word, it gradually grows.  Sometimes that fire is fanned into huge flames through our experiences.  Difficult times and trials can strengthen our faith as we learn to lean on God more and more and trust in his unfailing love.  There also may be times when we feel as though our faith falters, or we begin to question if God really exists.  But God is always faithful and will not snuff out even the smoldering wick of faith.  (A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. Isaiah 42:3)  Instead, the Holy Spirit continues to work in our lives as long as we do not completely reject him. Our faith is what sustains us throughout our lives and allows us to see the kingdom of God.  Our spiritual re-birthday becomes way more important to our lives than our belly button birthday, even if we forget to celebrate it with as much fanfare.

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again."  “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”  Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.  Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. John 3:3-6 (NIV)
John 3:5-7 (11 kb)
We are entering the preparation phase of Advent in the church year for celebrating a most important birthday - that of Jesus of Nazareth.  At the time some realized the importance of this most miraculous birth.  There was celebrating in the skies by the angels and in the fields by the shepherds. Others were totally oblivious or even unprepared, as was the innkeeper who had no room for them at the inn.
May we remember during this time of the year to prepare our hearts and minds for this most precious birthday, and not get too caught up in the preparations of the house decorations, the gift buying, the visiting and parties, etc.  The stress of what we have made this season into has it's toll.  Often times there are those who even dread this time of year, possibly because of bad memories of Christmases in their past, or because of sadness at not having other people around or celebrations to attend.  Actually, they are blessed with a great opportunity to focus on what really matters and not get distracted by the flurry of activities others experience.  We can all benefit from this time of Advent, preparing with reverent awe of what God has done for us in sending his Son to earth.

BLOTTED OUT...Saturday

 11/30/13

"Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool."
Isaiah 1:18

     I'm a nurse and I know from experience that it is very difficult to get blood stains out of uniforms or other clothing.  Have you ever had a paper cut and found the piece of paper that you were handling had a blood stain on it?  If you've noticed, blood over ink totally blots out the word.

     That's the way it is with our sins for those who believe in Jesus.  He shed his very life blood to blot out our sins forever.  Most of us, even when we forgive, do remember the incident later.  It has always amazed me that the Father says He not only sees us in Christ when we are forgiven, but He doesn't remember our sins anymore.

     Do you know why?  The blood.  Jesus' blood covers our sins so completely that they are gone!  What a concept -- not only gone, but forgotten forever.  Praise God for Jesus' sacrifice for you!

Waking Up...Friday

11/29/13

I must praise the Lord once again!  I have prayed, cried, begged, and pled to my Father to help me with my morning waking.  He clearly spoke to me a few mornings ago by awakening me with a feeling of restfulness and alertness. Yes, I argued with Him and flirted with staying in bed, but, I didn't let the enemy win.  It was clear that the Lord was speaking to me, to get up, exercise and see what else I could get done.  Perhaps even get to work on time.  Imagine that?  Something I haven’t done in um…longer than I care to admit.

I put on my walking video, I was going to do my usual three mile walk, but God knew me better and had my finger click on the two mile walk.  Oh, how wise He is…..I was ready to stop at the half mile marker.  My neck and head ached, my legs and arms felt weak.  I know it was the Lord carrying me thru those two miles.  But, oh what a wonderful beginning to my day; I saw the beauty of the early morning, as well as seeing the Lord answer another prayer.

Ephesians 5:13-14

 “But everything exposed by the light becomes visible;
 for it is light that makes everything visible.

This is why it is said:

“Wake up, O Sleeper,
Rise from the dead,
And Christ will shine on you.”

When I went to this scripture in my bible, I found that I had already starred, highlighted and written next to it “Christ will shine on me every morning”. Obviously, I had read this in the past and it spoke to me then, however, I went on with my life not being AWAKE to the Lord.  I am going to remember it this time.  What a perfect blessing  and great reminder to me that I not only need to wake up physically, I must wake up spiritually and keep my mind focused on the awesomeness of the Lord as He pilots my life through all the twists and turns, and ups and downs.  Keeping my eyes on the prize makes all the seasons of my life so much better!

Psalm 119:18

“Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.”

Enjoy this good morning song sung by Mandisa with Toby Mac.
A great way to start the day :)

Wave away my yesterday
Cause I'm leaving it behind me.
Hello sunshine, come what may.
I feel something new inside me.
I hear the birds singing
Now my alarm's ringing
Get up, get up, hey!

It's a good morning!
Wake up to a brand new day
This morning,
I'm stepping, stepping on my way
Good morning,
You give me strength,
You give me just what I need
And I can feel the hope that's rising in me.
It's a good morning

Slow down, breathe in,
Don't move ahead
I'm just living in this moment
I've got my arms raised, un-phased
Jump out of bed
Gotta get this party going
I went to bed dreaming,
You woke me up singing
Get up, get up, hey!

It's a good morning!
Wake up to a brand new day
This morning,
I'm stepping, stepping on my way
Good morning,
You give me strength,
you give me just what I need
And I can feel the hope that's rising up in me.
It's a good morning

Now I'm smiling, and I'm kissing all my worries goodbye
Got the feeling, if I spread my wings I might even fly
You are my truth, my way
Give me the strength to say
Get up, get up, get up
Cause it's a good morning, hey

Mr. Mac to the mic

[Toby Mac]
Hey, top of the morning to you 'disa
You smoothie, me ice cold pizza
Cafe au lait, latte dah
You do the zumba, but I do not
Give me like half a marathon,
I'll give you the gospel of St. John.
Hits me like a wake-up bomb
Cuz' we both know that His mercy flows,
In the morning.

Wake up to a brand new day
This morning,
I'm stepping, stepping on my way
Good morning,
You give me strength,
you give me just what I need
I can feel the hope that's rising up in me.
It's a good morning
Wake up to a brand new day
This morning,
I'm stepping, stepping on my way
Good morning,
You give me strength you give me just what I need
I can feel the hope that's rising up in me.
It's a good morning

[Toby Mac]
Top of the morning to you 'disa
Hey, top of the morning to you girl
To-to-top of the morning to you 'disa
Morning little Miss Sunshine.

Being Faithful...Thursday...Thanksgiving Day

11/28/13

Of course this week is celebrated in our nation as the annual day of thanking God for His provision, providence, and goodness toward all of humanity.  We, as Spirit filled believers, know that this isn't just a one day event – more like every moment of our life we praise and thank our Father for His awesomeness!  We can join with the angels and elders standing around the throne and worship God:

Revelation 7:12 - saying:

“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom,
Thanksgiving and honor
and power and might,
Be to our God forever and ever.  Amen.”

As a ‘fun’ way of calling to mind what we are thankful for, try making an acrostic poem using the word THANKSGIVING.  This is where you use each letter of the word to begin a word or phrase that expresses thanksgiving to Father.  As an example:

T – Time spent with loved ones
H – Homes filled with warmth and love.
A – Abundance of blessings to be a blessing to others.
N – Needs fulfilled
K – Kindness shown in tangible ways.
S – Savior, Son, Salvation, Sanctification
G – Gifts of power
 I – Indescribable beauty of God’s creation.
V – Victory over permanent death.
 I – Inspiration of the Holy Ghost to bless others.
N – Neighbors who come to our aid.
G – God, our Father

I leave you with an excerpt from “Wikipedia” that describes the first National Proclamation of Thanksgiving given by the Continental Congress in 1777:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgiving_(United_States)

During the American Revolutionary War the Continental Congress appointed one or more thanksgiving days each year, each time recommending to the executives of the various states the observance of these days in their states.

The First National Proclamation of Thanksgiving was given by the Continental Congress in 1777 from its temporary location in York, Pennsylvania, while the British occupied the national capital at Philadelphia. Delegate Samuel Adams created the first draft. Congress then adapted the final version:

For as much as it is the indispensable Duty of all Men to adore the superintending Providence of Almighty God; to acknowledge with Gratitude their Obligation to him for Benefits received, and to implore such farther Blessings as they stand in Need of: And it having pleased him in his abundant Mercy, not only to continue to us the innumerable Bounties of his common Providence; but also to smile upon us in the Prosecution of a just and necessary War, for the Defense and Establishment of our unalienable Rights and Liberties; particularly in that he hath been pleased, in so great a Measure, to prosper the Means used for the Support of our Troops, and to crown our Arms with most signal success:

It is therefore recommended to the legislative or executive Powers of these United States to set apart Thursday, the eighteenth Day of December next, for Solemn Thanksgiving and Praise: That at one Time and with one Voice, the good People may express the grateful Feelings of their Hearts, and consecrate themselves to the Service of their Divine Benefactor; and that, together with their sincere Acknowledgments and Offerings, they may join the penitent Confession of their manifold Sins, whereby they had forfeited every Favor; and their humble and earnest Supplication that it may please God through the Merits of Jesus Christ, mercifully to forgive and blot them out of Remembrance; That it may please him graciously to afford his Blessing on the Governments of these States respectively, and prosper the public Council of the whole: To inspire our Commanders, both by Land and Sea, and all under them, with that Wisdom and Fortitude which may render them fit Instruments, under the Providence of Almighty God, to secure for these United States, the greatest of all human Blessings, Independence and Peace: That it may please him, to prosper the Trade and Manufactures of the People, and the Labor of the Husbandman, that our Land may yield its Increase: To take Schools and Seminaries of Education, so necessary for cultivating the Principles of true Liberty, Virtue and Piety, under his nurturing Hand; and to prosper the Means of Religion, for the promotion and enlargement of that Kingdom, which consistent "in Righteousness, Peace and Joy in the Holy Ghost.
And it is further recommended, That servile Labor, and such Recreation, as, though at other Times innocent, may be unbecoming the Purpose of this Appointment, be omitted on so solemn an Occasion.

"His Ongoing Peace"...Wednesday

11/27/13

I so treasure and cling to the the ongoing Peace that my Savior Jesus gives me. Even though our lives at times can be hectic, challenging and unpredictable, our Lord's Peace is always there. The winds can be howling and very difficult times can be on the horizon, but Jesus's Peace remains steadfast if we will but trust Him.

God promises us in His Word in Philippians 4:7
"And the Peace of God, which surpasses all understanding
will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

We can entrust our every care into the hands of Jesus and in place of fretting and anxiety, He gives us His beautiful Peace. It is like a supernatural insulation around our hearts and minds from the works of darkness.

It does surpass all understanding of the human mind, but His Peace is ever so genuinely real. We can experience His Peace every day of our lives as we fully release our every care and concern into the hands of our Lord.

Experience and walk in His beautiful Peace today. It is a great place to be!

In His Beautiful Peace,
Sandy Billingham

Put Some Muscle Into It...Tuesday

11/26/13

When I walk into the gym my eyes are greeted with various types of exercise equipment. Bicycles, weight lifting bars, treadmills, punching bags, a swimming pool, etc. Each piece is a tool designed to equip me with body strength. I have to pay a price financially and physically to make use of these items. I pay the price because I want to be stronger and therefore healthier.

As believers God has given us a special strength in the power of His Holy Spirit. We can't buy it - it is a gift from Him to His children to equip us to be strong in the Lord. The cost? Zero, zip, nada. But there are some maintenance fees. Our effort is required in this venture. Just like sitting on a weight bench won't make me physically stronger, keeping a Bible on the table won't make me spiritually stronger.

To be successful in the gym or in my spiritual walk, I need to use self-discipline.

 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run,
but only one gets the prize?
Run in such a way as to get the prize.
Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training.
They do it to get a crown that will not last,
but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.
1 Corinthians 9:24-25 NIV

To gain strength, I must press beyond my natural limits, and put some muscle into it, whether my body or my heart is quivering with the exertion. I must not give up but determine to be steadfast.

But Daniel resolved not to defile himself
with the royal food and wine,
and he asked the chief official for permission
not to defile himself this way.
Daniel 1:8 NIV
Whether it's bible study group or a class at the gym, having company as I pursue my goals is a positive reminder that I am not alone. But even if no one is with me, or I feel alone, I have a promise from God to encourage me.

Therefore, since we are surrounded
by such a great cloud of witnesses,
let us throw off everything that hinders
and the sin that so easily entangles.
And let us run with perseverance
the race marked out for us,
fixing our eyes on Jesus,
the pioneer and perfecter of faith.
For the joy set before him he endured the cross,
scorning its shame,
and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:1-2 NIV

No matter where we are physically or spiritually, in this race that we call life, this is the one thing we can always hold onto:

 For it is by grace you have been saved,
through faith
—and this is not from yourselves,
it is the gift of God
—  not by works, so that no one can boast.
For we are God’s handiwork,
created in Christ Jesus to do good works,
which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Ephesians 2:8-10 NIV

Thank You Lord! For the grace and faith you so freely give to each of us. Please help each of us to accept Your loving gifts. Amen!

When Troubles Keep Coming...Monday

Lifting the clothes out of the washer, Ann started moving them over to the dryer. Something wasn't right, these clothes were sopping wet. "Aargh!" she thought. She just didn't need this kind of trouble.
She heard Ruth calling her, so Ann slammed down the lid, with the faintest hope that a jolt might get the washer working, and headed to the family room.

Ann had been living with Ruth for 3 years. Ann was the caregiver and Ruth was the Parkinson's patient. In the beautiful way that God often orchestrates in such relationships, they had become close friends and devoted sisters. Ruth knew something was wrong, and as she had a million times before, she wished she could do something to really help. She laughed when people would tease about how they wished they could 'sit around all day'. But she could never find the words to explain how very tiring and trying it actually was for her to do so little.

It was Sunday afternoon, they agreed that the easiest way to handle the laundry was go to Ann's house. Ann guided Ruth's chair carefully down the ramp in the garage. Once the wheelchair was loaded and they were both buckled in, Ann and Ruth played the checklist game. One of them would say, "Do we have our purses?" The other one would look and confirm by saying, "Check." Back and forth a few times more, and they would agree they had everything they needed. And then, in a way that was funny to the two of them, they agreed that if they didn't have something, they mustn't really need it.

Ann felt a little pang in her heart as she unlocked her front door. She had kept her home because she loved it. The last three years had flown by, and although she sometimes considered selling it - she had figured she would need it again some day. She pushed open the door and cold air greeted her. But she wasn't concerned, she had had a new furnace installed a few months ago, she went over to the thermostat and cranked it up before going back out to get Ruth.

"Last load?" Ruth asked when Ann came back into the den carrying an overflowing basket. Ann nodded, and asked her own question, "What time did I call the furnace people?" Just as Ruth was saying it had been 30 minutes a welcome knock on the door brought Ann to her feet. It was the owner of the company, and he had been mortified when Ann called to say her brand new furnace wasn't working.

Ruth enjoyed sitting in Ann's house. It was a pretty and comfortable home with lots of books, knick-knacks and frames full of pictures that told an interesting story about her friend. Ruth had stopped thinking of Ann as her caregiver a long time ago, and she hoped they would always be together. They had truly become loving sisters in Christ and she counted Ann as a great blessing. But tonight she wasn't comfortable. She was covered with one of those incredibly soft and warm fleece blankets, but her Parkinson's had made her joints very sensitive to the cold and now she couldn't wait to get home.

Rinsing out their hot chocolate mugs, Ann thanked God again for the amazing day He had given them. The last blessing happened at bed time, when Ann had gone to get the pain cream from the backpack they use for long days. As she held up her missing passport for Ruth to see it, they had both burst out laughing as the blessings of the day flooded in on them.

They had both laughed and praised God at His creative way of taking care of them. Ruth's broken washer had led them to Ann's cold house. The cold house led to the heat/air owner inspecting and restoring gas flow to the furnace before the weather dropped below freezing. Now the working furnace was set at a minimum temperature to prevent the pipes from freezing and causing all sorts of water damage. Finally, after searching through every file in her desk for her passport 2 weeks before, Ann had found her missing passport when she went to get the pain cream for Ruth's cold joints.

"I don’t think the way you think.
The way you work isn’t the way I work.”
God’s Decree.
“For as the sky soars high above earth,
 so the way I work surpasses the way you work,
 and the way I think is beyond the way you think."
Isaiah 55:8-9 MSG

Dear Lord, may I remember to stop labeling each thing in my life as bad or good. Please open my eyes like you did Ann and Ruth's. In Jesus name, amen.

CIRCUMSTANCES... Sunday

Devotional for 11/24/13

We aren't always happy with our circumstances, many of which we have had no control over.  But we do have control over our responses to them.  Sometimes our response is acting out, kicking and screaming.  Other times it may be to turn inward and to run and hide.  And what doe God say our response should be?

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.    1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)
1 Thessalonians 5:16 (42 kb)

I do not believe that means that God has caused us to be in these circumstances, or that his will is that we suffer.  Rather, his will is that we are able to hold on to our faith so that we may "rejoice, pray, and thank" him in SPITE of the circumstances, even in the midst of them. It is not always possible to be happy that we are suffering.  Sometimes the rejoicing can only be in the fact that we know God is still with us and that we will be with him in heaven some day.  Prayer helps us maintain our connection with God.  Turning to God in prayer helps us focus on his mercy and forgiveness, his grace, and allows us to ask him to strengthen our faith and use our experiences to his glory. Thanking him for the blessings that we do have helps us stay positive and strengthens our witness to others.  For it is God's will for us to receive the blessings of salvation in Christ Jesus and to share that with others.

May we forever rejoice, pray and give thanks to God!

FREEDOM...Saturday

  11/23/13

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.
Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves
 be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."
 Galatians 5:1

     No one like to be bound to another person.  Slave trafficking is a terrible result of sin in our society and world.  No one likes to owe so many debts that they become a slave to their work to try to pay everything off as the interest continues to mount.

   The same goes for Christians.  Why would we try to "pay" off our debts to God for our sins when we have already been set free by Christ?

     Christians do good works as a response of thanksgiving to God for something that has already been done for us by Jesus.  Christians have the ability to work in freedom as heirs with Chris, not as slaves to debts which we have no ability to pay in and of ourselves.  Jesus is everything.

     It is working for the Lord in His kingdom on earth -- spreading the gospel by words of hope and deeds of love -- that we find true freedom.  Christ has set us free and we are free indeed.

“Gratefulness”...Friday

11/22/13

I love to find gratefulness in each day.  Unfortunately, there has been many a day in which I have had a real challenge finding something that I feel grateful for.  The truth be known….it is all in my attitude!

“to be made new in the attitude of your minds”

Being a Christian doesn't mean that my life will run perfectly smooth, but, what it does mean is that I am a Princess of the Most High King!!  For that alone I am grateful every moment of every day.

However, during the mud and gunk of daily living; i.e. the job, the bills, the broken furnace, the fear of uncertainty, the medical appointments, the emotions and physical changes of menopause, etc., gratitude gets pushed to the back of my mind.  Then something happens like yesterday, I had my annual physical, which, I did not want go to at all.  When I called to schedule the appointment the day before, I did not expect to get in the next day.  Darn, I wanted to lose twenty pounds, as well as lower my cholesterol and get my blood pressure down.  You know, be perfect.  So, here I am going to the dreaded appointment.  The first thing the Medical Assistant says is that she is always glad to see me, as I am always such a happy person.  Wow, what a blessing that was, as well as an attitude changer.  Then the weigh in was not such a blessing, but, I survived, with a silent promise to myself to lose those twenty pounds before I step foot on that thing again.  (I have never made that promise in the past.  HA!)

We chatted as she did her job; she gives me another blessing because she remembers details of me and my simple little life.  My doctor comes in, whom I love dearly, but, as I said, I wanted him to see twenty pounds less of me.  So that it is, he saw all of me still clinging onto those twenty pounds, which he has so graciously asked me to work off for a few years now.  He listened with concern to all my little issues and had answers for them all.  My exam was done after a search for the missing light. Anita, he and I all got laughs about that, with the best being that my doctor likes the new lights because they are fun to turn on and off.  I thought that was pretty awesome, with the responsibilities of physician’s life, he had time to find pleasure in a simple thing, as how a light works, and not be angry that he had to go look for one. All in all, I spent over an hour at my appointment with the whole time feeling as I was his only patient.  On top of that, I am so extremely grateful that I will be finally getting help for the headaches that I have suffered from my whole life.

I came out of that appointment with a new attitude, a grateful heart and much hope for a future with a whole lot less head pain.  Praise the Lord!

Psalm 100

A psalm. For giving grateful praise.

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
    Worship the Lord with gladness;
    come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the Lord is God.
    It is he who made us, and we are his[a];
    we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving
    and his courts with praise;
    give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
    his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Giving Thanks...Thursday

11/21/13

"Thanksgiving to God for His Enduring Mercy"

Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is good!  How comforting and liberating it is to know our God's mercy is never ending it will always remain in existence.  Mercy describes God's character. Mercy can also be translated "loyal love".  Psalm 136 tells of his compassion for us.  We can look at the awe inspiring creation of this earth and see His mercy on us. We see God's provision and protection for His people in His mercy.  Oh give thanks to the God of heaven!

Psalm 136

New King James Version (NKJV)

Thanksgiving to God for His Enduring Mercy

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!

    For His mercy endures forever.

Oh, give thanks to the God of gods!
    For His mercy endures forever.

Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords!
    For His mercy endures forever:
To Him who alone does great wonders,

    For His mercy endures forever;

To Him who by wisdom made the heavens,
    For His mercy endures forever;

To Him who laid out the earth above the waters,
    For His mercy endures forever;

To Him who made great lights,
    For His mercy endures forever—

The sun to rule by day,
    For His mercy endures forever;

The moon and stars to rule by night,
    For His mercy endures forever.
To Him who struck Egypt in their firstborn,

    For His mercy endures forever;

And brought out Israel from among them,
    For His mercy endures forever;

With a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm,
    For His mercy endures forever;

To Him who divided the Red Sea in two,
    For His mercy endures forever;

And made Israel pass through the midst of it,
For His mercy endures forever;

But overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea,
    For His mercy endures forever;

To Him who led His people through the wilderness,
    For His mercy endures forever;

To Him who struck down great kings,
    For His mercy endures forever;

And slew famous kings,
    For His mercy endures forever—

Sihon king of the Amorites,
    For His mercy endures forever;

And Og king of Bashan,
    For His mercy endures forever—

And gave their land as a heritage,
    For His mercy endures forever;

A heritage to Israel His servant,
    For His mercy endures forever.
ho remembered us in our lowly state,

    For His mercy endures forever;

And rescued us from our enemies,
    For His mercy endures forever;

Who gives food to all flesh,
    For His mercy endures forever.
Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven!

    For His mercy endures forever.

Blessings,
Kathryn
