ROOTED... Sunday


Devotional for 1/12/14

A plant's roots serve very important functions.  They create a solid base and anchor in the soil for the plant to grow.  They can help a tree remain upright instead of falling over in wind and rain.  Water and nutrition are brought up from below to nourish the plant above the ground.  Roots even store the products of photosynthesis so that perennial plants can survive through their dormant winter stages.  Outside of the direct benefits to the plant itself, roots also can serve as food for people and animals.  We can divide root stock and propagate new plants.  Roots even provide control of erosion of the soil.  

A plant that is rooted in poor or rocky ground does not grow well.  Or if it is potted in a container that is too small, it can become root-bound.  The plant  then becomes sick and can die.  The same holds true for us.  If we become bound in bad habits and behaviors, it can lead to declining spiritual and physical health, unhealthy relationships, our life falling apart and hitting a rocky bottom.

When we are rooted in Christ, it serves to anchor us in healthy soil.  It helps us to stand upright through the storms of life.  It nourishes our soul. We are able to store up in our hearts the love of God to help us through the barren winter-like times.  As we overflow with thankfulness and share our faith, we propagate new Christians.  Our roots help hold us all together, controlling the erosion of our foundation, helping us withstand any attack this world may hold.

Just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.  Colossians 2:6-7
