As I entered college and would pour out my woes - her answers were steady, firm, and consistent. She didn't budge on a principle but would concede to passing trends. I am sure my ideas of how things should be made her sigh or roll her eyes. But her replies never stung, no hint of sarcasm, no 'I told you so' when I ended up in the very mess she had predicted 'might be the result.'
Forty years later and she still writes notes in cards. They are shorter but just as functional. 'I love you. I am proud of you. Family is the most important thing. I miss you.'
But not everyone has a Grammy who knows how to articulate love in a way that it can be understood and appreciated. Even at their best, there isn't anyone who can take perfect care of you or me. But there is Someone who cares about you even more than the best Grammy in the world ever could. He is waiting even now to listen to you, to comfort you, and to guide you. He has written you many letters and they are wrapped up in one place waiting for you: the bible.
This Someone even has friends waiting to meet you. The easiest place to meet them is at church. The safest way to get to know them is at church activities. The fastest way to become good friends is in bible study.
So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.
James 4:7-10 Amplified Version
Dear God in Heaven, thank You for knocking on the door of our hearts and giving us ears to recognize Your knock, bravery to open the door, and humility to let You in. Thank You Lord, that it is never too late, never too early, never the wrong time to accept Your gift of love. In Jesus Name, amen.
Now God has us where he wants us, with all the time in this world and the next to shower grace and kindness upon us in Christ Jesus. Saving is all his idea, and all his work. All we do is trust him enough to let him do it. It’s God’s gift from start to finish! We don’t play the major role. If we did, we’d probably go around bragging that we’d done the whole thing! No, we neither make nor save ourselves. God does both the making and saving. He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing.
