Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor:
If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NIV)
When we try to be totally independent and not rely on anyone else, we can find ourselves in dire straights. Sometimes we need help. That help can come in the form of friends. They can lift our spirits when we are down. Our grief can be divided when it is shared, and our joy can be multiplied. Another set of eyes, ears, and hands can bring new insight, understanding and strength. There are times when we need the help of friends.
Our greatest help comes from God. Jesus is our greatest friend, who can always be relied upon to be there for us. He provides everything we need, though not everything we want. His greatest gift to us is forgiveness and life everlasting. No greater help exists. What a friend we have in Jesus!
Dear Lord in heaven, thank you for the gift of friends who help me in many ways. Thank you for being my greatest friend who will never abandon me, and for the help you provide me every day. Most of all, thank you for the greatest gift of all - salvation! Help me to be a friend to others as you have befriended me. Help me to share the Good News of your gift of forgiveness and eternal life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
