Desensitized...Tuesday

2/24/14

I spoke with a friend recently about temptation and sin. We discussed how people have become desensitized to the things of this world. Not very long ago the thought of half-dressed people on TV would be unimaginable, shocking and distasteful. In today’s world, we see far worse than that on television. Video games are full of violence, blood, and gore. Racks of magazines with disgraceful images sit eye level to children in supermarket check-out lines.  Movies portray a glamorous life for those who dare to walk on the wild side. Billboards plastered with liquor advertisements decorate our buildings and line our streets. The media focuses on divorce, crime, war, and adultery. Sadly, many people have turned a blind eye to the changes that are taken place, not only to what is going on around them, but to what is going on within them, as individuals.

1 Peter 5:8 reads,
“Be alert and of sober mind.
Your enemy the devil prowls around
like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour”.

How many people have said, “Just one more drink won’t hurt” or “I can watch this show without it affecting me”. The enemy would like nothing more for us to believe that lie. He would like for us to believe that “flirting” is innocent and that one little “white” lie doesn’t do any harm.

There are many passages of Scripture in the Bible that warn us about being careful not to fall into the enemy’s hands.

1 Corinthians 15:33 reads,
“Do not be misled: 'Bad company corrupts good character.'”

Hebrew 3:13 says,
But encourage one another daily,
as long as it is called “Today,”
so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness”,

and Proverbs 6:27-28 asks,
“Can a man scoop fire into his lap
without his clothes being burned?
Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?”

Why do some people think that they can dabble in sin without there being any consequences or harmful effects?

God has given us many tools to help us stay on the right path and to keep the enemy at bay. His word is a powerful tool that oftentimes goes unused. Bibles sit on many shelves collecting dust. Prayer is another essential weapon that is lacking in many lives. Let’s put on the full armor of God daily and keep walking the good road. Be on guard at all time for the enemy’s subtle tricks that will lead us astray.

Remember this…
Sin will take you farther than you want to go,
keep you longer than you want to stay,
and it will cost you more than you ever thought you'd pay

Song for today is  – "Waiting on the Night to Fall" by Casting Crowns

Lyrics

There's an old man living in the back of your woods tonight
You forgot he was even there, but you've never slipped his mind
He's living off of scraps of you you never knew you left behind
And as the sun goes down, he rises with a smile

He's waiting on the night to fall
The old mans coming to call
You don't see the writing on the wall
He'll never step out in the light
No, he's just biding time
And while you slumber, he's gonna come and take it all
Hes waiting on the night to fall
Hes waiting on the night to fall

He knows you have the answers, but truth lies dusty on your shelf
And the sword that you could slay him with has become an ornament and nothing else
You could put him back down in his hole in the ground, but he knows you never will
He's been around so long you got used to the smell

He knows hell never have your soul
But he will gladly rob you blind
While you're feasting at his table, hell tie your hands and numb your mind
Hell take you farther than you wanna go
Hell keep you longer than you wanna stay
And it will cost you more than you ever thought you'd pay

He's waiting on the night
He's waiting on the night to fall
The old mans coming to call
But you don't see, you don't see the writing on the wall
He's waiting on the night
He's waiting on the night to fall
He's waiting on the night to fall

  1. This is dark but the night watcher is dark as well. It is a serious song and topic but one we need to be aware of so that we can avoid the snares of evil one.

    God bless
