On Mission...Wednesday

2/12/14

You will notice that the title of this devotional is ON MISSION...not On A Mission.

One of the things that I really love about church is the message every Sunday. Often it turns out to be a mini Bible Study. Most Sundays the pastor shares Bible scriptures or a story. The different slant is always so illuminating and food for thought on through the rest of the week.

This past Sunday our Youth Pastor stood in for our Lead Pastor who was recovering from a surgical procedure. He started off with a sort of bizarre "bubble" with one of our teens inside. Bubble boy walked to the center of the area. He was supposedly safe and protected from the ills and challenges of the world.  He knew all he needed to know to be assured of his salvation. All he had to do was stay in his bubble away from others, and he would not face danger.

Then the pastor read this passage from the Message Bible, John 17:13-19...

Now I’m returning to you.
I’m saying these things in the world’s hearing
So my people can experience
My joy completed in them.
I gave them your word;

The godless world hated them because of it,
Because they didn’t join the world’s ways,
Just as I didn’t join the world’s ways.
I’m not asking that you take them out of the world
But that you guard them from the Evil One.
They are no more defined by the world
Than I am defined by the world.
Make them holy—consecrated—with the truth;
Your word is consecrating truth.
In the same way that you gave me a mission in the world,
I give them a mission in the world.
I’m consecrating myself for their sakes
So they’ll be truth-consecrated in their mission.

You see, Jesus came on a mission for His Father. Part of the mission of Jesus was to share the knowledge about required missions with the people and teach them how to also be on a mission for God. Whatever our mission, it is on our God given path. We need to follow through with it. Once we learn what our God given mission is, we must go on that mission.

Still there is another aspect that is very important.The next step is to be on a path that shows that we are ON MISSION...in other words...ON TRACK. When we are on mission our lives reflect it. We live lives that are pleasing to God and not let ourselves become distracted by superfluous side roads. The thing we do not need is to stay cooped up in a protective bubble.

And that about wraps it up. God is strong, and he wants you strong.
So take everything the Master has set out for you,
well-made weapons of the best materials.
And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything
the Devil throws your way. This is no afternoon athletic contest
that we’ll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours.
This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish
against the Devil and all his angels.
Ephesians 6:10-12
