LABOR AND REST
We take the first Monday in September off from work for a holiday that honors working. Seems odd. Not everyone gets the day off, but for those who do, it is often a day to relax, maybe have a cookout with family or friends, etc. Many see work as a chore, something we must suffer through. It is because of our sinfulness that working has become difficult for many.
... “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” Genesis 3:17-19 NIV
Some wonder how taking an extra day off is honoring our ability to work. But it can be a time to get extra rest. We remember that God wants us to rest from our work on a regular basis. But his rest is different. First, he wants us to honor him on "the day of rest", the Sabbath.
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Exodus 20:8-11 NIV
But he also wants to give us regular rest from our burdens and worries. He wants us to know that he has it all handled, that we are to do what we have the ability to do but to leave the results to him.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28 NIV
Our God is so loving, he even knows we need rest and renewal. May you be refreshed in God's arms today.

This is an interesting commentary on the Sabbath, Jan. How far we have come from the way the Lord set it up. Now the only thing that makes the Sabbath different from all other days is that we go to church.Lots of food for thought here.
