Being Tested

My 17 year old son took a test recently. This test was extremely important to him and to his future. As far as he was concerned everything he would do, become, and where he would go depended upon a successful completion. He passed his behind the wheel driving test with flying colors. I was proud and, needless to say, he was elated.

Where we live, my son had to practice driving for at least six months before he could even take the test. Every 10 minute drive to the grocery store, Lil' Ceasar's Pizza, drycleaning, even the dentist, became hands on opportunities for him to build and strengthen his skills.

It makes me think of how God prepares us to handle the big things that happen life. When little disappointments happen and we choose to trust Him, it's like learning how to keep our car in between the white lines. Then medium things happen, and we decide to trust God even though we're not sure why these things are happening. Like learning how to change lanes quickly but safely, we choose to trust that He is still going to lead us someplace good (see Jeremiah 29:11).

Then the big troubles strike us, and we seem to stop breathing as we take in what has happened. The pain, grief, and disappointment may overwhelm us, but having some experience in trusting, there is a place inside of us where we know we can trust God. Like having just enough fuel left to get to the gas station on the other side of the desert, we can know that relief, strength, and comfort are ahead of us.

 Trust God from the bottom of your heart;
don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;
he’s the one who will keep you on track.
Don’t assume that you know it all.
Run to God! Run from evil!
Your body will glow with health,
your very bones will vibrate with life!
Proverbs 3:5-8 The Message

Dear Lord, thank You for being such a patient instructor, and thank You for Your Word being full of wisdom to guide us. In Jesus name, amen.
